Tips for Donating and Consigning Clothes and Accessories

  • Donating
    • Must be in good condition without stains or rips - it's all about helping recipients make a good impression and feel good
    • Can be tax deductible -  have a list of articles you are donating and write them on the receipt for taxes
    • Research on Charity Navigator where and how the donations are used to better the stated benefactors . Choose a charity that matches your values, societal goals, heart strings or experience that meets the highest standards established in Charity Navigator.
    • Dress for Success is a great option that defines itself as "an international not-for-profit organization that empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life".
  • Consigning
    • Only current styles - within 1-2 years will be accepted by resale or consignment stores. Exceptions can be made for authentic designer clothes and accessories
    • Read the agreement carefully and mark in your calendar when you can pick up unsold clothes
    • Typically consignment stores will automatically own or donate your consigned items at the 3 month mark unless you remember to pick them up
    • Prices of items can decrease the longer they are not sold so be prepared for that
    • Items must be on hangers, cleaned and without stains or rips; shoes and leathers should be well maintained
    • Consider brick and mortar and on line consigning and resale store options
    • Decide if you would rather sell flat out at a quoted price or consign wherein you split the sales price for a pre-agreed percentage
    • Have as much authentication documents for designer items to garner the best price
    • Be prepared to manage photographing, uploading, pricing, customer inquiries, shipping and returns if you choose on line options like PoshMark or ebay.
